Delicious. Wythe Hotel. Candy for my eyeballs.

This shoot was really a labor of love for me in so many ways. First, the Wythe Hotel is in my ‘hood, so, it’s always good to work local. Secondly, the models are very dear friends of mine. Amber is a fellow beauty artist who I work with frequently, and she and her boyfriend were lovely enough to be our gorgeous couple for the day. It’s always good to work with your buddies!

I was super excited to create Amber’s makeup design. She looks great in deep, saturated colors, so that’s what I was going for. Yet, still keeping it appropriate for a wedding, and not skewing it towards high fashion editorial makeup (which can get really wacky). Her eyes had a matte color gradiation of yellow to orange to red to fuschia in the outer ends. And feathery-looking false lashes, glowy skin, and a nude lip. Gorgeous.

The idea for the shoot was bold and tropical in NYC. Tropical bird-inspired creations abounded in this shoot, which was put together by some of NY’s best designers. The participant list is, I think, the longest one I’ve seen yet.

HI ABBY!!!! Look at you looking all pretty! I had such a blast looking at your wedding photos today. Because omg. Come on. Stop it. Really, just stop.

Without sounding too overly gushy (too late), Abby is a gorgeous, inspirational person. I was so glad to hear she would be wearing a black, tea-length, tuile and sequin gown. (Especially one that so gloriously shows off her back tattoo.). There is NO reason why you can’t wear black to your wedding. Because it’s YOUR wedding! (That being said, all shades of white are also often stunning!) I’m just sayin,’ people shouldn’t feel like they’re stuck with pale colors if they don’t like them. In fact, Abby’s wedding prompted me to write a little piece on non-traditional gowns.

Working with Abby was incredibly easy because we pretty much had the exact same style ideas. About almost everything. For example:

Anyway, the makeup design. I had to amp it up. A plain, natural color palette wouldn’t have worked with her dramatic style choices. So, we did an iridescent, super smoky eye with purples and charcoals. Hot.

The dress has so much fun movement in it. Another thing making it awesome. Easy to dance in!

And I remember saying to Lindsay when I was doing her makeup, something to the effect of that she is “elfin,” or, “sprite-like,” or something like that… clearly I watch too many fantasy movies. I was trying to tell her that she is tiny and lovely! I’m not sure I was clear on that. So, I’m explaining myself now. That’s what I meant, Lindsay!

Here’s me putting the finishing touches on her face, while the hair people wait patiently so they can take out her rollers and finish the hairstyle. That’s usually how it works; hair is set, than makeup happens, then hair is let down and styled. It’s a process.

I do have to say, that as much as I LOVE the Metropolitan Building, the Bridal Suite is really quite cramped. There’s so many rooms in that building, I don’t know why I always end up squished in one hot room with a million bridesmaids and moms and all the hair people… definitely something to keep in mind, future brides. (I mean, it’s fine. I’m just spoiled.).

What a jaw-droppingly stunning day you guys had. Thanks so much for having me on board. It was lovely working with you and your ladies.

They were married on a bright, windy day in February. Pretty.

When Emilia came to me for her trial, I knew immediately that she’s just one of those kind, loving, warm human beings that you just want to hang out with. She never seemed to stop smiling. And I liked that.

For her makeup design, our primary concern was skin. So I used a combination of different foundations and concealers to make her look super flawless. And then we vamped up the eyes, and voila!

And despite the crazy winds, her hair held up pretty well! Nicely done as always, Stacy Pitt.

Emilia was having a Brooklyn-y wedding in Manhattan. Which I thought was cool. You can still have a more relaxed aesthetic and artistic sensibility, even if your venue happens to be in Manhattan! It can be done.
